Overton makes no mistake

Overton's six-under-effort at the TPC Four Seasons Resort put him just ahead of fellow American Ryan Palmer.

He picked up shots at the third and fourth on the way to the turn in 33 and then added four further birdies coming home in a blemish-free display.

Sergio Garcia, who withdrew from an Open qualifier earlier this week and did not even play a practice round because of an infected fingernail on his left hand, was in a nine-man group on four under.

Joining the Spaniard with rounds of 66 were Keegan Bradley, Dustin Johnson, Joe Ogilvie, Scott Piercy, Jeff Quinney, Chris Riley, Will Strickler and Josh Teater.

Palmer, who has made the cut just once in seven previous appearances at this event, admitted he had handed over the decision on which club to take and what shots to play to his caddie James Edmondson.
